First Gig with the StudioLive1642

Here’s my first time taking the StudioLive console out to a gig. My goal was to create several different monitor mixes and mix live from the stage with it. Despite a few problems with a late drummer and ground hum with the Keyboard channel, we pulled off the gig in style. The difference in fidelity was huge! The band commented on how much easier it was for them to hear on stage. Having the gate set as a downward expander on the vocals really helped to get the monitors loud and clear. On the next blog, I’ll try recording using Capture. Seeya!

I see that the EQ is set using the LED meters. Is the EQ limited to the step frequencies shown by each LED or is the EQ a continuous filter? Same question for High Pass Filter and Dynamic settings? I love the product I can't wait to see one in person.

That is the coolest live setup I've seen used at a wedding. I can't wait to see more of your videos. Love the blog.

Looks amazing! I can't wait to see one in real life! Good job on an improvised setup, Rick, you're a pro

The EQ and HPF are actually both continuous filters. The LED's show you roughly where you are. This is still better than the frequency sweep knob on an analog console where you really don't have much of a clue when you are sweeping around. I will find out the exact resolution of the EQ for you on Monday since we are closed for the Holiday.

You guys are going to love the next blog. Eddie Mapp (FOH Engineer for Stone Temple Pilots and Evanessence) is one of our beta testers and is also helping to write presets for the Fat Channel. He was in town and got to mix my band on the StudioLive. We recorded it using Capture. Fun times!

Greetings from other side of the world. I like your approach in setting live. It seems we have same problems all over the world (the drummers:)))

Just one question. You were setting a snare sound, and when doing that, you said "ok , noise gate, and little bit slower relase",.. Is this some new feature in gate section? Or If threre is no gain reduction that attack and relase then work with gate??? I'm asking in regard to photos of fat channel I have seen at gearslutz, where noise gate has only threshold, and all other parameters are within compressor. Sorry for bad english. Hope you've understand my question.
Btw. Great machine, and great band!

what about a pad switch on each channel? does the 118db dynamic range mean the studiolive doesnt need pad switches on all the channels?

thanks!

Hi Igan,

The posting on Gearslutz was an older one. At that time we only had threshold for the gate. We have since added release time (very big improvement) and also two different gate modes: one is a downward expander and the other is a true noise gate. These are switchable in the system menu in pairs. The downward expander mode sounds much more musical for vocals, guitars, etc.. But the gate mode works nicer for drums (especially drummers that hit very hard and have a lot of bleedover into the drum mics).

Regarding the pad: yes, because of the extra dynamic range in the StudioLive, we did not find a need for a Pad. The potentiometer of the preamp goes down far enough even with a very hot microphone and has plenty of gain for dynamic mics (even ribbons).

What about Video ? can you run video inside of capture as you mix? Or can you sync your video to the mix as you mix?

I'm looking to purchase the studiolive to replace my A H mixwizard. This will be my first move towards digital mixing. Is there an EQ for the main outputs? Would I still benefit from carrying a dual 31 band EQ for FOH? I noticed on the live gig video there was something in the kick drum insert, I'm figuring an EQ again, since everything else is onboard. Basicly I'm just trying to figure out what I should be keeping from my analog set up. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

We just added a 31 band EQ for the main outputs in the latest firmware which is downloadable from our site.

Could you please enter a Feature Request to add the 31 band graphic on the aux sends as well?? Using as monitor console, that would get rid of the outboard graphics needed. Solo is already post EQ and that is what is needed for a queue wedge!!

In talking to tech support, they have entered the 31 band GEQ for auxes as a feature request!! Thanks!!!!
