New Feature! Daisy Chaining two StudioLive mixers!

Hey Folks,

We made a cool announcement about the first firmware update coming for the StudioLive. This will let you link two StudioLive consoles together to create a 32x4x2 mixer. Check it out!

Does Capture record the 32 tracks as well?

What makes the signal connections between the two, firewire?

Hi Rick,

When you're adding functions anyway... :-) it would be great to see a "Capture" page added to the system menu at some stage, with very basic rec/pause/mark control and passed/remaining recording time feedback. Then the laptop can be stashed away after arming Capture. And maybe add the option to lock the digital out pre/post button on the fat channel when Capture is recording?

Cheers, Rens

Awesome! One thing... When daisy chaining, I let the user select if the subgroups buses will sum or not. Think about.... if I need to "group channels" (e.g drums, percussion, back vocals, etc.) to main, I will able to do 4 different groups PER console (so "pseudo" 8 bus total), summed via master mix bus. Cheers!!!

Hi Folks,

I'll answer your questions one at a time.

Yes, we will be introducing a new update for Capture as well that will let you do 32 inputs.

The connection between the 2 mixers is one firewire cable. All you do is connect the cable and then assign one mixer as the master and the other as the slave and you are done. You can daisy chain them without a computer hooked up. But of course, when you hook up the computer, you can track 32 inputs simultaneously as well as play back all 32 streams to the computer.

Regarding Paul's comment on the psuedo 8 buss idea: That is an awesome idea. If we can pull it off, it will work the same way as the FX processors: everything will feed into the main bus but the subgroups of the slave will be for that side and the subgroups for the master will be for the other 16 inputs. I can't promise yet, but we are working on making that happen. THANKS for your input.

Hi Rens,
Thanks for your comments. One product idea I had was a little usb remote for Capture that would simply arm all the tracks and give you a transport. (kinda like the old Alesis BRC was for the ADAT). Don't know if it would happen, but if enough StudioLive customers want it, I'm sure we'll make one.

Wow Rick, it's getting better and better... What about the good old (well, mine is pretty new actually) Mackie Control, will it be able to control Capture??

Enough with the teasing. When can we get our hands on it?

I posted this in another part of this blog but thought it might be a bit dated and so re-posted here. Just watched the videos and gotta say I'm impressed. I've been shopping for a mixer for several weeks now for my studio and almost committed to another brand. One question however. I can appreciate not including moving faders to keep the price down but will the faders generate any type of midi message at all. This would allow for automating your DAW faders while mixing in the box. This would allow for the option of either mixing via the board or in the daw. I can assign the faders on my Axiom keyboard to the faders in my daw but doing it with 100mm faders would allow for much greater control.

Do you think that it'd be possible in the future to also be able to use 6 auxes per console if you're daisy chaining? I was very excited when I heard that you could now daisy chain the mixers, but the idea of using 2 efx per console ****then in the future (if possible)**** having 4 subgroups, and 6 auxes per console-- that would make it amazing. I just wish it had moving fader operation so I could control my DAW with it.

Hey Rick,

Looking forward to its release! Is it possible to load CAPTURE and use the SL with two different computers? For example, can I use my MacBookPro at the gig to record the raw and then transfer the session to work on on my MacPro without having to make any configuration changes on the SL? Some firewire devises can only work on one computer without resetting the firmware and most registered software can only be usable on one computer. Thanks and good day!

Well, I just called my dealer and ordered one, I got the last one coming in their initial shipment. As far as mixing in the box goes, I'll just use a FaderPort (which I also ordered). Really looking forward to this unit, it's going to open up a few options to expand the services my studio offers.

Yes, you can load Capture on multiple computers and use it with the same StudioLive board.

wow! This is awesome! I talked to sweetwater today about this and we are ordering two of them for our church front of house setup. This is going to be great for churches who want to go digital on a budget. Only thing though...it would be great to have the routing of the aux sends so that you could have 12 mono sends or 6 stereo for in-ear mixes when using two 16.4.2's. Also, having possibly 8 sub groups instead of the four. With that done...I dont see why anyone would want to go with a D-show over this unit! Thanks presonus! I have been using your digimax pres for years in my studio and now i am pumped abut using your products as front of house!

Concur with Chad's comments.

Yeah, we are working on the firmware to give you a psuedo 8 bus board when two of the StudioLive's are chained together. It would work like this: The subs of board #1 would be for the first 16 channels and the subs of board # 2 would be for the second 16 channels. However, all of the subgroups could feed into the MAINS. That is the plan as of now. We'll see if we can pull it off.

Following the Chad's comment, what about selecting which auxes to link between two units and which not? I could have for example auxes 1-5 linked between the two units and two separated aux 6. This could be useful in particular setups. Cheers!

I just hope it sounds as good as it looks. If it does you guys will have a monster on your hands. Enough with the moving faders. Look at the price.

Great work. Great thinking

Hi, anxious for the StudioLive to arrive! I have a FireStudio Projects installed now. Will I need to uninstall its drivers before installing the StudioLive?

Any future plans to chain the Firestudio to the StudioLive for the purpose of recording?

6:28 PM
Blogger ricknaqvi said...

Right now the plan is to have just StudioLive's chained to each other. However, since the StudioLive uses the same chipset as the Firestudio Project and Tube, it's not to say that we could add daisy chaining between the SL and the Firestudio Tube/Project at a future time.

Hi,

Can I connect 3 Studio Live and record entire tracks?

Thanks,

Right now the limit is 2. We might be able to to link 3 but at that point you will have to limit the number of firewire returns. The max is 64 streams. So, hypothetically, you could record 48 and playback 16 streams.

Enilson doens't know what he's talking about. If you want a DAW with motorized faders you should look elsewhere. This is not a DAW it's the way a PA mixer should be built! I had my Studio Live less than a month and love it. Wow what a great product! This is the perfect PA mixing board for live shows. Not to mention great for rehersals, recordings, etc... It saves me hunderds if not thousands of dollars on gates, compressors, limiters, effects...putting it all in one package ....eliminating dragging all that stuff around in my rack...and it sounds great. I can record off the show and mix down later with motorized faders in the studio afterwards. Plus with 6 aux's, I can send a different mix to each monitor. Maybe a couple years from now it might be a good idea to offer this unit both ways...with and without motorized faders. But Everyone is making a DAW controller. But this time Presonus considered the performing artist way to go Presonus!!!!!...for developing the best low cost expandable live PA mixer ever in this price range price!!!

Hi,

Just wondering why there's no mention of this feature in the manual on the Presonus website? Has the feature been cut/delayed? It would be useful to have all that info written out clearly somewhere.

Cheers,
Anthony

Every serious digital live sound board has motorized faders, except this one. Also, driver support for my firestudio 26x26 has been horrendous, and it's still unreliable to this day. Features with Presonus are good, implementation is not. Stay away!

SInce the StudioLIve does not have physical MAIN inserts, what is the best way to get an EFX such as a BBE Sonic Maximizer into the MAIN outs?

Hi Rick,

You mentioned in your YouTube Video that clips are available to physically join the two boards. How do we get these clips? And do you install the Universal Control first for both boards before joining them or after?

Does any one else know how this is done?

Harvey

Hi...Does it works only with Capture or even in Cubase (LE4 x example)? Does it configures automatically or needs to set differently the busses intputs?
The fx of each one does works separately or linked by?
